In a significant stride towards strengthening diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Benin Republic, the Advocacy Group for the Establishment of the Nigeria-Benin Permanent Joint Commission, led by National Steering Committee Chairman of the Advocacy Group Ambassador Oguntuase Kayode, held a pivotal meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During the session, Ambassador Oguntuase, underscored the urgent need for formalizing relations through the establishment of a Permanent Joint Commission.
Ambassador Oguntuase highlighted the pressing issues faced by both nations, ranging from smuggling to cross-border security challenges, emphasizing the potential solutions offered by the proposed Joint Commission. He stressed the importance of leveraging the existing cordiality and collaboration between the presidents of Nigeria and Benin Republic to expedite the establishment of the commission. Drawing inspiration from successful Joint Commissions with neighboring countries, Ambassador Oguntuase emphasized the economic and cultural benefits that such cooperation could bring.
Furthermore, Ambassador Oguntuase emphasized the pivotal role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in facilitating the communication between the advocacy group and the government. He expressed confidence in the Minister's support and underscored the imperative of addressing cross-border challenges to enhance bilateral relations.
In response, the Minister for Foreign Affairs acknowledged the special relationship between Nigeria and Benin Republic, affirming their shared interests and commonalities. He stressed the importance of private sector and civil society involvement in fostering organic cooperation between the two nations. Additionally, he highlighted the need for proactive measures to diffuse tensions arising from border disputes.
The Advocacy Group commends the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for their support and commitment to the initiative.
